  1. My husband & I moved cross-country from Washington State to NC. After living in WA state for 20 years, it was a huge change for me. The weather is my biggest complaint. It is hot and humid probably about eight months of the year in NC. Winter goes straight into summer, no Spring-like weather. Summers are the worst here, with temperatures in the 90s for months. Autumn is my favorite season, alas it is still humid right up to November. I miss the crisp cool weather of WA, the trees changing colors and the cool weather. I even miss the constant rain. Here in NC, we have a large home with an even larger garden. One can’t find that in WA state unless one has pots of money. Where we live, there are no public transportation, you have to drive everywhere. The good thing with this move is that I am now living on the East coast of the US, which I have always dreamt of. It might not be the east coast that I would prefer to make a home in, technically we are in the South. But there is a lot of history here, being one of the original 13 colonies. There’s the Outer Banks which is my favorite place. And there’s Asheville with the beautiful Biltmore Estate. I can feel so much history around me. I am
mixed about the people here though, some are friendly and there are others that look at you with suspicion. It’s been 3 years and I am trying to cope, weather-wise.
I enjoy reading your blog. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Hi, Jazz! I love your name! There's jazz in Asheville--or will be again soon--so I hope you can take advantage of that. As for NC: my sister lives in Asheville and I can't wait to go see her new place. My daughter and son-in-law lived there for 2 years. I found the sun to be much more intense than Brooklyn. And the summer weather to be too difficult. Then my daughter moved to Rochester, NY, famous for being snowed in by the lake effect. Deep inside, when they planned this move, I said "No! Please don't go someplace where the winter is worse." But they went, as kids do, and when Covid hit I became a refugee from Brooklyn here in Rochester. I'm find the weather not too bad. Though it's often cloudy and windy because of the lake, I'm training myself to look for and enjoy shades of gray. I bought windpants so my lower half would feel better on cold windy days. I plan to get involved in cross-country skiing so that I can look forward to winter weather rather than dread it. We're only in mid-November, but I'm trying to find good in these circumstances. I hope I can encourage you and support you in looking for what's good in NC weather and locales. Take advantage of being near the Eastern Seaboard--that's something I miss a ton, though I'm taking steps to appreciate Lake Ontario instead. You didn't ask for advice, so I hope I haven't offended. Let's make a pact to focus on the good in our situations. Pinky swear?

  3. My two younger sisters and I are talking about a trip sometime next year to the Atlanta area for our first time. We haven’t taken a sisters trip in many years. I’ve been to Louisiana, but my sisters have never been to that area before and we can’t wait to check out the culture, architecture, cemeteries, museums, try the local seafood (for our dad was a commercial fisherman out of Morro Bay, CA,) the mint juleps and meet some local residents. Oh, and don’t forget the pralines! Sincerely! Barb (Starr) Phimister from Cambria, CA

    1. Hi, Barb! I'm so glad you're planning to take a sisters trip. What a great chance for renewing / strengthening that bond. I've only been in Atlanta once, long ago, and went to The Underground, basically a shopping mall built into a former subway system. Been to New Orleans once -- don't forget to have a beignet in N'Orlans. I hope your plans for travel together gel soon.
