The Big Onion, The Second City, The White City, The Windy City

Chicago was a blast today.

But the town has a bit of an identity crisis:  too many nicknames.  It's identity crisis reminds me of New Jersey -- not sure exactly what to identify with -- Philly?  New York City?  Some other place?

I took an architectural boat tour and got a few stories, not as many as I hoped, but lots of pictures of world-class architecture.

Like this one, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, that curves with the riverbend and reflects the river and buildings opposite:

I especially appreciated the bridge houses, where bridgekeepers used to work:

Not far from here, Al Capone put his men in a boarding house to live and keep watch on his enemies -- Bugsy Malone, for example -- as they came out of Schofield's Florist.  It was run by Dean O'Banion for its money laundering capabilities and because O'Banion loved to arrange flowers.  Gangsters would buy flowers there for funerals held in Holy Name Cathedral across the street.  Capone capitalized on this and had a few enemies shot coming out of Schofield's.
